Road safety is an important issue on South African roads. Because of this they have established a project called “Arrive Alive”. This campaign should show how dangerous it is, when young people don’t follow the South African road rules. “Arrive Alive” tries to reach a lot of different target groups. Some groups are road users, tourists, students, private businesses, victims of road accidents and their families.
When you drive on South African roads you have to know two important numbers. The most important number is the emergency telephone code 911 and then you also should know the number of the NTCC (National Traffic Call Center)(phone: 0861 400 800). There you can report bad drivers, unsafe vehicles and wreckless and negligent drivers as well as fraud and corruption within the traffic situation.
On all roads in South Africa you can find about 6.5 million vehicles. It’s very shocking that 65% of these vehicles don’t have any insurance. These are alarming statistics if you consider the high accident rate in this country. The vast majority of these vehicles are older ones where drivers argue that the cost of cover is too high considering the actual value of the vehicle. You also should know when you want to make holidays in South Africa that the speed limit on the roads within an urban area is 60km/h. The most important problem in every country is alcohol at steering wheel. This also is an important issue in South Africa. You can see That this is a big problem looking at statistics showing that 50% of all people who died on the road had an alcohol concentration above 0.05 gram per 100 milliliters. Because of this the government decided that it’s not allowed to drive on South African roads with an alcohol concentration above 0.05 gram per 100 milliliters.
