Hallo alle
So I’ve been in Germany for three months now and a lot of things have been happening. Time is flying and I’ve been so busy. But first I just want to say thank you to my friends at HJG for making me feel very welcomed and comfortable. You guys are unbelievable.
So I received some questions from some English students and ill try and answer some of them as best as I can.
Differences between German food and Australian food?
Breakfast (Frühstück) in Australia usually is cereals, toast and fruit. A bigger cooked breakfast on the weekends with bacon, egg, mushroom, baked beans, sausages, tomatoes, toast. A popular breakfast food in Australia is Vegemite that you have on toast. Frühstück in Germany is usually bread, toast, bread rolls with, marmalade or honey, meats, chesses eggs, and strong coffee or tea.
The evening meal (Abendessen) is the main meal of the day for Australians. Common dishes would be roast meat and vegetables, pasta, pizza, casseroles, barbecue, vegetables, salad, soup and stir-fries. In Germany Mittagessen is the main meal of the day and you eat so much potatoes. And Abendessen is very similar to Frühstück wich breads.
Iconic Australian food is Vegemite, (I love vegemite) Macadamia nuts, Violet Crumble, a honeycomb chocolate bar; Cherry Ripe; Jaffas (chocolate with an orange-flavoured confectionery shell), Tim Tams (a chocolate biscuit), Fairy bread, Lamingtons, Weet-Bix, ANZAC biscuits and the pavlova. I don’t eat kangaroo meat.
Which animals live in Australia?
Dingo, kangaroo, platypus, echidna, frilled neck lizard, koala, wombat, snakes, Tasmanian devil, bilby and wallaby.
Favourite TV shows?
Gossip girl, one tree hill, Australia’s next top model, Skins, Gilmore girls, how I meet your mother and Greek.
What are popular sports in Australia?
Australian rules football, basketball, cricket, golf, netball, rugby league, swimming and tennis. I play netball on the weekends.
Why did you decide to be an exchange student?
I wanted to experience a new culture and speak a new language. I like to try new things so experiencing different foods, studying different subjects and enjoying a new way of living. I wanted to teach people in Germany about Australia. I wanted to develop a lifetime of international friendships.
Favourite music?
I like rock and alternative. Some bands I like Temper Trap, powderfinger, The Kooks, jack Johnson, foo fighters, the script, the academy is, owl city.
Now been living in Simmern for one month with my second host family. This month I have been exploring my new village and now I have a very good idea where things are and I don’t get lost. I’ve payed for my euro tour which im very excited about. This is where I get to visit many different countries in Europe such as Italy, France, Belgium, Switzerland and Hungary. This will be in the summer holidays. Also I went to Maimarkt and went on every ride and ate a delicious crape. The atmosphere was amazing and I enjoyed evry part. I’ve been going around to different English classes to give speeches about Australia and myself. I’m so happy that I was given the chance to meet other people not form 12 year. I hope to vist more classes in the future so if you want me to talk to your class you can just ask I don’t bite ?….
I had my rotary orientation weekend, where I was able to meet the other students in my district. They are from many different countries such as USA, Canada, Brazil, Ecuador and New Zealand just to name a few. When I first arrived it was a little daunting but then straight away I felt part of this huge family, we were making jokes and laughing. I already have so many nicknames sea shell, muschel and many more. We went bowling that was so much fun, there was loud music and crazy lights.
Hello HJG, This month has gone just as fast as the first, I blink and another week passes. The grass is slowly changing to a wonderful shade of green and the sky is bright blue until the next day when it’s dark and raining ?. My family say “April does what he wants” you can never predict what the weather is going to be like. This month I’ve been very busy with school and focussing on learning German as fast as I can.
My school friends are amazing they make me feel so totally welcome. I’ve been invited to peoples house for music, hanging out, watch movies and chatting just spending time with them is so much fun. They help me with my German and I love the feeling, when they talk to me and I can actually understand what’s going on, AMAZING feeling. The progress is the best thing and the encouragement I receive when I talk and they can understand me. If feels like I’ve known then for so much longer then two months.
My second host mum is a primary school teacher and I was able to join her and her year five class for their reading night at school. All the children are able to spend one night at school to read and have lots of fun. They were all very interested by me, they had many question about Australia but the most fascinating subject for them was snakes. They wanted to know everything about them but the best question was “Do you know anyone who has been killed by a snake” it was a crack up. All the children got the chance to read a page or two from their books and I even read my German book for them, they were very impressed.

Hey hope everyone is going good ?, I Spent Easter with my host family we went to Lorilie rock where there was a middle age festival. We did axe throwing and bow and arrow shotting. It was so cute everyone got dressed up sung songs and danced. Then on the Monday we went rock climbing about a two-hour hike up the mountain, it was so steep. But so exhilarating when you complete a difficult part and the view from the top of the Rhine River was amazing.
I travelled to Bonn with my Rotary club to look at the history museum. It was very interesting to learn more about Germany’s history. Also I got to meet the other Rotarians family. And made so new friends with their children. Then went back to school after two weeks off, everyone is still as wonderful and friendly as before. I’m enjoying school very much because just being there lets me communicate with people close to my age and we always have a good time.
On last day with my first host family we went to Koln and visited the Cologne Cathedral. 900 and something steps later in these tiny walkways we were at the top and could see the whole city of Koln. My camera was well used that day. Half way up there is these medieval balls, they are so huge and we were lucky enough to hear them ring. Then we walked along the Rhine down to the chocolate museum. I tasted chocolate from their famous chocolate fountain. It was very interesting to see the process from start to the finish product ?. But the best part was the chocolate shop yum yum.
Last weekend I moved to my second host family. Family NolI, have two brothers and one sister but they are all old and have moved out. I get to see them on the weekend. The last three days I have been in Oxford England with my Rotary club. My Rotary club has a partner club Oxford North and unbelievable we had good sunny weather while we were there. We were able to stay with Rotarians in their beautiful houses. The flight was one hour, it was so unbelievable for me to imagine travelling to another country in that amount of time. We went in to an observatory and a museum, very informative and in English ?. We also just walked around the collages and streets of oxford. There are so many people and so much to see. The trip was so fast and busy I could have stayed there a few more days.

Frohe Ostern (Happy Easter) The family has started to prepare for Easter, there are so many rabbits and eggs all through my village. I went and visited my fourth host family and we painted/dyed about four dozen eggs and decorated them with stickers. It was so much fun in the end our fingers were bright blues and greens ?. We also baked cakes in the shape of a lamb very cute and iced it and then ate it, very yum.
Hello my name is Michelle Wakefield, I'm an exchange student from Australia.
I'll be attending HJG for one year. Currently I'm living with the Tenhaeff family in Ellern.
In Australia I live in Penrith it's west of Sydney. I've finished school in Australia so i wanted to travel to another country and experience their language, food, culture and people. Therefore I decided to come to Germany through Rotary youth exchange. Throughout my time here I hope to share my experiences and compare the different lifestyles of Australia to Germany. I'm looking forward to meeting many people while I'm here.
