“Hast du die Größe? Fahr mit Verantwortung” – this is the name of a German road safety campaign. The campaign informs the teenagers with trailers in cinema, posters and advertisements about the risks of driving. The campaign is supported by TV stars like the VIVA host Collien Fernandes, TV host Sarah Kuttner and the German football player Philipp Lahm. You can see a lot of big posters on highways where these stars tell you that speed merchants (Raser) are not sexy. The main target groups of the campaign are the 18 to 24 years olds because 20% of the road casualties were in this age.
A study made by the German “Bundesanstalt für Straßenwesen” shows that in the year 2005 every 6 minutes a teenager was involved in an accident and actually every 8 hours a teenager was killed in a road accident. Because of these harrowing facts the campaign tries to inform the teenagers about the risks of driving and wants to reduce the number of road accidents with teenagers. The results are very good, because the number of teenagers who where killed by road accidents in 2006 was reduced by 10%.
But not only this road safety campaign has tried to find ways to make driving for teenagers safer. The German government tries to reduce the accident risk with prohibition for novice drivers because alcohol is a very important cause of accidents. Also there are restriction for young motorcyclists because the accident risk per kilometer for motorcyclist is 20 times higher than the risk for car drivers.
